This film is based on the true story of Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu, who was a 19-year-old street hawker when the Soweto Student Uprising erupted on June 16, 1976. Although he missed the student protests that day, Solomon was brutally beaten by a police officer for jumping a train. This incident becomes a major turning point in Mahlangu’s life. He goes into exile with the ANC to train as a freedom fighter. Upon his return to South Africa, he becomes an international icon of South Africa’s liberation movement. Made by black South African filmmaker, Mandla Walter Dube, and an all-South African crew, and told wholly from the black perspective, Kalushi is an important anti-apartheid story and a seminal film on the country’s continuing path to seek truth, equality, compassion and reconciliation.
