Festival Highlights
- Opening Night Film: ’76 with visiting Nigerian filmmaker Izu Ojukwu and Afrobeat Dance Party on Friday, February 2 at the Hollywood Theatre, with film screenings at 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., followed by a ’70s Afrobeat Dance Party at 11:30 p.m.
- Symposium on Cheikh Anta Diop of Senegal, arguably Africa’s greatest scholar of the 20th century: The documentary film Kemtiyu: Cheikh Anta will be followed by a panel discussion with local academics on Saturday, February 3 in a matinee screening at 2 p.m. at PCC Cascade.
- Co-screening with the 6th Portland Black Film Festival and the 28th Cascade Festival of African Films of the documentary film Footsteps of Pan Africanism (USA/Ghana, 2016, 78 min.) directed by Shirikiana Aina Gerima, on Sunday, February 11, 2 p.m., at the Hollywood Theatre. The film revisits the era of Ghanaian independence and the American Civil Rights Movement from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s.
- Special appearance by Dr. Bassem Youssef, known as the “Jon Stewart of Egypt” and named one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People,” at the screening of Tickling Giants, the documentary film about his life, on Thursday, February 15 at 7 p.m. at PCC Cascade. Talkback followed by a book signing.
- New African Theatre: Two afternoons of staged readings of new plays by African writers from South Africa, Nigeria and other countries, performed by local actors, on Saturday, February 10 and Saturday, February 17, both at 2:00 p.m., in Moriarty Arts & Humanities Building, Room 104, PCC Cascade.
- Join us each Saturday at 5:00pm for a Saturday Social Hour before the evening feature! Meet up with friends to enjoy food, live music and an extended African Marketplace in the lobby of Moriarty A&H Building on the PCC Cascade Campus.
